This fun and sensorial craft activity results in beautiful puff paint birthday cakes that can be used for a variety of sorting and graphing activities as well as a beautiful bulletin board.
What you need:
Cut-out Letters
White construction paper in circles and rectangles
Construction paper in different colors
Hole Punch
Shaving cream
Paint or Food Coloring
Paper plates
Glue
Brushes
Small Baggies
Doilies (Circular and Rectangular)
Scissors
What you do:
Cut-out and store the letters for each name in baggies, one per child. Let children punch colorful dots from construction paper using the hole punch. Store the dots until needed.
Make puff paint by placing equal amounts of shaving cream and glue on paper plates (i.e. ½ cup shaving cream + ½ cup glue). Add drops of paint or food coloring to each plate and mix well.
Give each child a sheet of white paper in either or a circular or rectangular shape, depending on their individual preferences. Have children brush the "icing" onto their papers, pretending as though they are frosting birthday cakes.
Have children add colorful paper dots (sprinkles) to the tops of their "frosted cakes."
Then, have children spell their names on top of their cakes using the letters in their baggies.
Once cakes are dry, trim the edges with pattern-edged scissors. Let children glue their finished cakes to doilies in the shapes that match the shapes of their cakes.

Transfer the cakes to a bulletin board based on the children’s favorite graph or sorting activity. Or the cakes can be arranged on a bulletin board according to birthday month or age.
