This year we spent a day on colors. We started the day at morning meeting with a simple color wheel and the corresponding KidsSoup Colors Word Wall cards.
Colors Word Wall Cards (KidsSoup Resource Library)
As a group we named each of the six colors on the wheel and displayed the word wall cards in the same pattern as the color wheel on a table with colored counters. Children chose a few counters and placed them on their coordinating card as they passed the table to wash their hands for snack.
Later in the day we, brought the word wall cards back out for science. We put a spin on the classic baking soda and vinegar experiment by adding color. Children chose two primary colors by verbally naming them and selecting the correct word wall cards. We added one of the colors to a small dish of baking soda and the other color to a cup of vinegar. The children were given these items and an eyedropper. We recorded their initial responses and displayed them with a photo for their families to see how they learn through play.
The children had so much fun blending colors that we carried the theme into the next day while making play dough. We always make a double batch of dough so there is enough to go around. The children voted for blue and yellow dough.
