Monsters and Halloween Week 1

Start the week off singing, reading, and discussing There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. Follow-up with related materials that provide children with opportunities for sequencing, writing, and studying the -at word family. Once children have established familiarity with the structure and sequence of events in There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, introduce There Was An Old Monster, which follows a similar pattern. Use the corresponding literacy activity to guide children through a lesson in which they compare and contrast the two books using a Venn diagram. Refer to the list of recommended activities below for other ways to introduce this month's monster theme with a focus on rectangles, the color purple, the letter R, and the sight words and, am, and at.
