The importance of instilling the concept of...
We love hedgehogs and we couln't resist to create a hedgehog craft with some fall leaves. Show children a picture of a hedgehog and let children describe the animal. Explaint that on the back of the hedgehog is a thick layer of spikes known as quills. Their curved claws help the hedgehogs to dig. It's long snout with a wet nose gives the hedgehog an excellent sense of smell. Discuss that some species of hedgehogs hibernate when the temperature becomes too cold. Explaint that during hibernation hedgehogs are not really asleep, instead they drop their body temperature to match their surroundings to save energy. This is a great fine motor skill activity and even small hands will have fun lacing leaves to make the hedgehog.
What you need:
Maple leaves
Egg carton cup
Black or brown pipe cleaner
Wiggly eyes
What you do:
Make a hole in the middle of the egg carton cup and push pipe cleaner through. Form the end into a ball to secure the pipe cleaner in place.
Push pipe cleaner through one leaf at a time.
Continue until you have a nice amount of leaves on the pipe cleaner. Form the end of the pipe cleaner into another ball and cut off excess pipe cleaner. (Note: Don't push the leaves too close together.)
Glue wiggly eyes on the head.
If desired, cut two small ears out of craft paper and glue them to the back of the egg carton cup.
