Sinterklaas Puppet Craft and Rhyme

Dutch children in Holland, or the Netherlands, anxiously look forward to St. Nicholas Day on December 6. They eagerly await the arrival of Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas is a kindly bishop. He wears red robes and a tall, pointed mitre on his head. With him he brings his white horse and a huge sack full of gifts for the children. Children leave out a shoe for Sinterklaas to fill with candies.

What you need:
Lightweight red craft paper
Black, orange, yellow craft paper
Black and red marker
Cotton balls
Tape
Glue
Scissors

What you do:
Fold the craft paper in half length wise.

Open the paper and fold each side to the middle.

Tape sides together.

Cut off a 1 1/2 inch wide piece from the top.

Fold the two top corners towards the middle. Add glue to keep it in place.

For Sinterklaas' face draw a half circle, the width of the folded red craft paper, on the orange craft paper. Cut out.  Decorage with a nose, eyes, and cheeks and glue on the front of the Sinterklass body.

Glue cotton balls all around the face to make the beard. Cut out two skinny strips of yellow craft paper and make a cross on the hat part.

Cut a black strip to make Sinterklaas' belt. Add glue and wrap around the body. Cut out a square from the yellow craft paper and glue to the middle of the belt. With a black marker draw and paint a smaller square in the middle.

For the arms, cut another strip out of red craft paper that is longer then Sinterklaas' width and glue it to the back. Add some orange hands.
