Parts of a Flower Science, Fine Motor, and Craft

Children will learn the parts of a flower and hone their fine motor skills while making this beautiful suncatcher craft with common flowers from the garden. Your children (and everyone else) will love seeing their suncatchers hanging in the window, on the wall, or from the ceiling. NOTE: This would also make a great Mother's Day gift.

What you need:
Cut flowers (most types of daisies, roses, pansies, sunflowers, and geraniums are safe)
Scissors
Small pie tins or paper plates

What you do:

Take flowers and cut off stems. Place the flower parts in the middle of a table with five small pie tins or small paper plates.

Science / Fine Motor / Sorting

Let children decompose the flowers by pulling off the leaves, the petals, etc. This is a great opportunity to discuss and point out the different parts of the flower. Instruct children to sort the parts in to the different pie tins by stem, petals, flower heads, and leaves.

Let children use a magnifying glass to look at the different pieces closer.

What you need:

Parts of a flower pieces
Contact paper or laminating sheets
Wood skewer
Ribbon or yarn

What you do:

Place a piece of contact paper, sticky side up in front of each child.

Let children use the different parts of the flowers to make a flower art sun catcher. Invite children to use the different parts of flowers to make their own flower. Children place the flower pieces on the sticky side of the contact paper.

When the artwork is completed, add a wood skewer to the top of the sticky paper. Fold the top part of the contact paper over the wood skewer to keep it in place. Place a second piece of contact paper on top. Attach a colorful ribbon to the wood skewer and hang from a window, on a wall, or from the ceiling.

Be aware and don’t use any of the following poisonous flowers:

Chrysanthemums, sometimes called Mums or Chrysanths

Lily of the Valley

Daffodils

Tulips

Narcissus and snowdrop

Most types of daisies, roses, pansies, zinnias, sunflowers, and geraniums are safe.

Mother's Day Craft

Cut out red heart shapes and let children write a short message for their Mom on it. Place the heart on the sticky side of the contact paper before you cover the artwork.
