The importance of instilling the concept of...
Plastic Easter eggs are a great tool for providing practice with reading, forming, and sorting CVC words. Here we provide a few ideas to get you started!
What you need:
CVC Word Picture printables (available from the KidsSoup library)
Plastic Easter eggs
Basket
Black permanent marker
Tray
What you do:
Print the CVC Word Pictures, laminate if desired, and cut out each circle. Separate the plastic eggs into halves and mark the smaller halves with beginning letters and the larger halves with the remaining letters to make the CVC words that match the picture cards.
For example, for the word “hat,” the edge of the smaller half of the egg would be marked with the letter “h” and the corresponding edge of the larger half would be marked with the letters “at.”
Separate the egg parts and place them in a basket. Place the basket on a tray. Demonstrate to children how to line up the edges of egg halves to match single consonants to vowel/consonant word parts. Explain that when the two halves are attached, they form a word with a CVC pattern. Children can use the picture cards as clues to each word and once a word has been made, they can place the matching picture card inside the egg.
CVC words containing the short o sound.
Encourage children to find ways to organize or sort the filled eggs. They can sort by beginning letter, short vowel sound, or word family.
If you have small toys, or a dollhouse or doll accessories available, this activity can also be done with objects instead of picture cards.
The same general guidelines apply.
