The importance of instilling the concept of...
Discuss with children the importance of brushing teeth daily after each meal, or at least in the morning and at night. Brushing teeth every day helps them to stay healthy and cavity-free.
Explain that the daily cleaning of teeth prevents bacteria (have children say: bak-teer-ee-uh) from forming a sticky film on teeth called plaque (have children say: plak).
Tell children that after they eat, bacteria go crazy over the sugar on their teeth, like ants at a picnic. The bacteria break down the sugar into acids which eat away tooth enamel, causing holes called cavities. Plaque also causes gingivitis (have children say: jin-juh-vi-tis), which is a gum disease that can make gums red, swollen, and sore. Explain that gums are the soft pink tissues in their mouths that hold their teeth in place. (Source: kidshealth.org)
